following the huge success and media coverage of the kaust university inauguration ceremony in september 2009, three monkeys was hired to create an interactive exhibition for the janadriyah heritage & culture festival, located on the outskirts of riyadh.

for this event, three monkeys created various interactive applications and graphic installations which showcased the special features and history of the state-of-the-art university. organized annually by the national guard since 1985, the janadriyah heritage & cultural festival has become one of the most important cultural events in the arab world and a major tourist magnet, attracting more than one million visitors each year.

the center piece of the exhibition was built around a lounge area which was surrounded by four petals symbolizing the kaust logo. several films about the university’s history were projected on the petals, such as king abdullah’s vision more than 20 years ago, the planning and construction phases, and the inauguration in september 2009.

the scientific history of kaust’s four strategic research fields was presented on four interactive timelines, each consisting of seven synchronized 46’’ lcd touch screens. these provided visitors with information related to milestones in the fields of bioscience, energy & environment, applied mathematics & computational science, and material science.

thanks to coffee tables with integrated touch screens, visitors were able to learn about kaust research centers and community facilities. an interactive map was also on display to provide visitors with an overview of the university campus. to guarantee optimum visibility from both sides of the coffee table, the entire interface could be rotated in any direction.

holographic touch screen displays with fully animated 3d user interface were installed around the exhibition area to provide in-depth information. visitors could browse through almost one thousand images and several hundred pages of text in english and arabic which presented information about the university, including its features, the september 2009 launch ceremony, the history of science, and saudi arabia.

the technical implementation of the kaust exhibition was realised together with mediascreen munich, the inventor of the 65“ holographic touch screen, among other innovative products, and with whom three monkeys has had many successful partnerships on past projects.
